Mother Earth’s care and nurturing requires a year round focus, so I’m always glad to find fresh ideas that make a big difference.
A friend recently forwarded me an article that appeared in a recent issue of the AARP Bulletin (no longer your grandfather’s retiree rag J) which offered 50 facts & tips worth noting. Here’s a capsule of some lesser known ones, or click the link above to read all 50:
- Set your water heater at 120 degrees. Many are set to 140 degrees, which is both wasteful and hazardous.
- Soot reduction, easy and cheap to do, could halt warming enough to preserve Earth’s polar ice cap.
- Biofuel could soon be used in jets fitted to fly on this lower-carbon source.
- Use your wood-burning stove or fireplace only on special occasions; the smoke pollutes both inside and outside air.
- Loading dirty dishes without rinsing saves up to 20 gallons of water per dishwasher load.
- The 806 million cars and light trucks in the world burn 260 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel a year.
- The average American accounted for 17.7 metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2009, down from 20.3 metric tons in 2005 (although still 4 times the world average).
- Since 2001, the bald eagle and nine other U.S. wildlife species have bounced back from endangered status.
- In the last 50 years, world oil consumption grew 401%, from 21.3 million to 85.8 million barrels a day. U.S. consumption rose (up 198%), so did China’s (up 458%), Japan’s (724%), India’s (1,850%) and Germany’s (409%).
