Walking the Talk in Everyday Life

“We can do no great things, only small things with great love." -Mother Teresa

I try to keep this quote in mind, believing that one by one – action upon action – a better world can be built if we consistently match actions to ideology.

Over the weekend, I came across an article posted in GreenBiz.org about David Gottfried, founder of the U.S. Green Building Council, who has authored a new book, Greening My Life. David details a 100 point Green Life ratings system to clean up one’s act, not just environmentally, but personally as well. Good stuff, but what caught my attention was the parallel the writer made between David and her own mom, whose life personified his tenants, well before such behavior was popular or politically correct.

The biographical references put into sharp focus that it’s the small things that matter most: planting a garden, recyling our refuse, teaching the young how to care for the earth…

Whether for the environment or in our own life, we can wait for the big chances to happen or we can create the result we want, one step at a time.
